Retro Arcade
Pixel Knight is a one-room boss fight in the style of the 8-bit action-platformers: no levels to wade through, just you, a sword and a boss that has learned to hurt you. Defeat the Stone Golem, then the Ember Dragon, then the Lich King in his graveyard. Free in your browser, with on-screen buttons on phones.
Boss fights in classic action-platformers are teaching exercises. Each attack has a telegraph, a short, readable animation that tells you what is coming, and a punish window afterwards when the boss is open. Pixel Knight is built on that rhythm. The Stone Golem raises both arms before a ground slam, shakes before it lifts a rock, and casts warning marks on the floor before rubble falls. Learn the tell, avoid the attack, then hit back while it recovers.
Against the Golem, stay close enough to swing but be ready to jump: the slam sends two low shockwaves along the floor that only a jump will clear, and thrown rocks arc toward where you are standing, so keep moving. Against the Ember Dragon, the safe places and the hit windows go together. The ledges on each side lift you above the swooping dive, and the dragon is only vulnerable while it is low, during a dive or when it lands to breathe fire. Attack it from the side it is not facing.
The Lich King vanishes and reappears, casting skull volleys and ripples of bone spikes along the floor — hop the spikes, and strike when he finishes a spell. All three bosses get faster and add attacks as their health drops, and each phase change drops a heart pickup. Hit-and-retreat beats trading blows: you have three lives, a short invulnerability window after each hit, and the sword's reach is longer than it looks.
Move with the arrow keys or A and D, jump with Space or the up arrow (hold for a higher jump), and swing the sword with X, J or K. On touch screens use the left and right buttons plus Jump and Attack.
Stay within sword range, jump over the two ground shockwaves after its slam, step out of the path of thrown rocks, and attack when it recovers. It gets faster and adds falling rubble when it is hurt.
Only when it is low: during its diving swoop, or when it lands to breathe fire. Jump onto a ledge to avoid the swoop and swing as it passes, or attack its flank when it lands.
Stay close but keep your feet ready: bone spikes only hurt you on the ground, so jump when the green warning marks appear. He is solid and open to your sword while he casts and right after, but untouchable while he is fading out and back in.
A heart drops each time a boss enters a new phase. Pick it up to gain a life, up to a maximum of five.
