Stack the falling blocks, clear the lines, and survive rising junk.

Blockfall is a falling-block puzzle in the classic mould: four-square pieces drop into a ten-wide well, you rotate and place them, and every full row clears. Three stages get faster, and the later ones start with rows of junk already in the way. Free in your browser, with touch buttons on phones.

Falling-block strategy that holds up

Falling-block puzzles have been around since the mid-1980s, and the core idea has barely changed because it does not need to: pieces of four squares fall, you steer and turn them, and a full horizontal row disappears. What separates a good run from a bad one is not speed but tidiness. A flat, even surface gives every future piece somewhere to go; a surface full of holes and spikes does not.

A few habits help. Look at the next-piece preview before you place the current piece, so you can leave the right shape of gap. Keep the stack low and flat, and avoid creating covered holes, which only clear after you dig down to them. Leave one column empty at the edge for long pieces, and use clears of several rows at once to score much more than single rows. The ghost outline shows where the piece will land, so use hard drop only when you are sure.

Blockfall has three stages. Stage one is a gentle warm-up of fifteen lines. Stage two starts with four junk rows, each with one hole, and wants twenty-five lines at a quicker pace. Stage three starts with eight junk rows and a fast drop speed over thirty-five lines. If the stack reaches the top you lose a life and the top of the well is cleared so you can carry on, but you only have three.

Common questions

What are the controls?

Use left and right (or A and D) to move, down to drop faster, X or the up arrow to rotate, and Space to hard drop the piece instantly. On a phone use the on-screen buttons.

How does scoring work?

Clearing more rows at once scores much more: one row is worth 100 points, two 300, three 500 and four 800, multiplied by the stage. Dropping pieces faster adds a few points, and finishing a stage with lives remaining gives a bonus.

What are the grey rows?

From stage two the well starts with junk rows. Each has exactly one hole, so fill the hole and the row clears.

What happens if the stack reaches the top?

You lose a life and the upper part of the well is cleared, and play continues. You start with three lives.
