From Breakout to Brick Blaster

Brick breakers trace back to Atari's Breakout in 1976, where a single ball and a wall of bricks was the entire game. Taito's Arkanoid (1986) is the version most people remember: it added falling power-up capsules, tougher silver bricks, and indestructible gold ones. Brick Blaster follows that Arkanoid recipe, and the sound is synthesised live in your browser rather than played from audio files.

A few habits separate a clean clear from a lost ball. Hit the ball with the edge of the paddle to send it out at a sharp angle — the centre sends it almost straight up, which is safe but slow. Dig a channel up one side of the wall and get the ball above the bricks: it will bounce around up there and clear rows on its own while you collect capsules.

The power-ups are worth chasing but not at any cost. W widens the paddle for about fourteen seconds, S slows the ball down, M splits it into three, and the rare pink 1 gives you an extra life. Stage two adds gold bricks that never break — they are there to bounce off, so aim at the silver and coloured bricks around them.

Common questions

How do I control the paddle?

Use the left and right arrow keys (or A and D), or move your mouse or drag a finger across the screen — the paddle follows. Press Space, or tap, to launch the ball.

What do the power-up capsules do?

W widens your paddle, S slows the ball, M splits it into three balls, and the pink 1 is an extra life. Catch them with the paddle before they fall off the bottom.

What are the grey and gold bricks?

Grey (silver) bricks take two hits. Gold bricks are indestructible — the ball bounces off them and you never need to break them to finish the stage.

How many levels are there, and is my score saved?

There are two stages and three lives. Your best score is stored in your browser, and you can share a result card or challenge a friend to beat it.
