What actually happens to your photo

When you pick a photo, your browser reads it directly with the File API and slices it into a grid using CSS background positioning — the image data never leaves your device, which is also why this works without any account or upload step at all.

Some photos make noticeably better puzzles than others. A picture with clear edges and varied color across the frame — a group photo, a busy street, a plate of food — gives every piece a distinct visual landmark to work from. A photo that's mostly one plain color (a clear sky, a blank wall) turns into a much harder puzzle, since half the pieces look nearly identical.
